Mind - extracts from Buddhism

The mind is wavering and restless, difficult to guard and restrain: let the wise man straighten his mind as a maker of arrows makes his arrows straight.
The mind is fickle and flighty,it flies after fancies wherever and whenever it likes: it is difficult indeed to restrain. But it is great good to control the mind: A mind self controlled is a source of great joy.
He whose mind is unsteady, who does not know the path of truth, whose faith and peace are ever wavering,he shall never reach the fullness of wisdom.
Make your mind a fortress and conquer Maya(craving) with the weapon of the steadiness of mind.Guard your conquest.Remember your body is just a clay pot and would soon lie on earth without life, without value, useless like a burned log.

Vigilance - extracts from Buddism

To attain Nirvana, which is going beyond death, you need to be vigilant. If you are not vigilant you cannot escape death.
If you are leading a disciplined life in harmony with Dharma,if you meditate earnestly you can make an island for yourself that no flood can wash away.

Watchful amongst the unwatchful, awake amongst the sleepy, the wise man runs a race like a fire ball burning all big and obstacles of lust and greed on its way.

Fear only thoughtlessness.

The holy robe - extracts from Buddism

The man who puts on a holy robe with impurity in his heart is not worth of the robe. The one whose heart is pure from sin and whose soul is strong in virtue, who has self harmony and truth is worthy of that robe.

The rain seeps through the ill thatched hut, passion will seep through an untrained mind. As rain cannot seep through a well thatched hut , passion cannot seep through a strong mind.

Those who are selfish suffer here and hereafter in both the worlds. The people who are selfless rejoice in both the worlds.

Those who preach scriptures but fail to practice their teachings are like cowherd counting other's cows.

Maya - extracts from Buddhism

'He insulted me,he hurt me,he defeated me,he robbed me.' Those who have such thoughts will not be free from hate. For hate is not conquered by hatred: hatred is conquered by love. This is an eternal law.

Many do not know that we are here in this world to live in harmony. Those who know this do not fight against each other.

He who lives only for pleasure, and whose soul is not in harmony, who considers not the food he eats, is idle and has no power of virtue - such a man is moved by Maya,is moved by selfish temptations, even as a weak tree is shaken by the wind.

The four truths-Buddhism

I'm going to write this on a regular basis ,to share and not to forget what I learnt. This was suggested to me a year back by my very close"spiritual pal" Amit Chakraborty( Delhi).
  • Life is a suffering.
  • Suffering is caused by craving.
  • Suffering can be overcome only by some kind of a overwhelming happiness.
  • The fourth truth is- this overwhelming happiness can be achieved only by following the "Noble eightfold path".
